Chapter 1 - Introduction to I-Term
Question : What is I-Term?
Answer : I-Term is a program that allows you to use the Information
Super Highway, otherwise known as the Internet. This
program makes it easier to use and understand.
I-Term is a program that was made to be HUMAN FRIENDLY. It allows
you to do things on the Internet, without even knowing anything about
it. You don't have to be computer friendly, just simply follow the
menus and then you will be navigating through the Information Super
Highway in a matter of minutes. A lot of the Internet commands
are now done with a single keypress, instead of typing in lots of
complex commands.
So it saves a lot of time, money, typing, and the hassle of trying
to figure out all of those "Information Super Highway" commands!
Chapter 2 - Setup of I-Term
Question : How do I run I-TERM? Is there anything I have to do first?
Answer : Before you run I-Term, it has to know a few things about
your Internet account before it can procede.
When you type "SETUP" (without the quotes) from DOS, it will ask you
a few questions. The questions are described below......
1) Color or Black and white option (This option is the first option
that you should see after running SETUP from DOS). If you have a
CGA,EGA,VGA, or Super VGA card on your PC then you should choose
the color option. If you have a Laptop or Notebook computer that
cannot display color then you will need to set the option to black
and white.
2) E-mail address question is for your entire Internet E-mail address
for instance Cyberwork's Internet E-mail address is ve1@cec.wustl.edu
and you should have one also.
3) The dial up phone number should be next. This phone number is the
phone number to dial up to the Internet. Please leave out the dash
in the phone number. This is the wrong way to enter in a phone
number: 256-5345. This is the right way to enter in a phone number:
2565345. (To disable call waiting use either 1170 and the phone
number or *70 and the phone number)
4) Enter the Communications port (Com Port) number to access your
modem. If you dont know the port number try each one until you
get it to work. On some PCs COM1 is for the mouse and COM2 is
set for the modem, try this and see if this works.
5) Baud rate (also known as Bits Per Second or BPS) will set the speed
of your modem. If your modem is a 2400 baud (2400 BPS) modem then you
would set I-Term to 2400. If it is like most 14,400 BPS modems on
the market today, you will want to go to 19200 or 38400. I would
go against anything higher than 38400 with a 14,400 BPS modem unless
you are an advanced computer user that knows about FIFO (First In,
First Out) buffers and such. If you have a new 28,800 BPS modem, I
would set it at 38400 for the highest speed.
6) Input the drive you installed I-Term onto.
(for example d: would install I-Term to your
D-drive). Hit <enter> if you decompressed I-Term
onto your c: drive, as this is the default.
At this point, you should return back to DOS and you are ready to use
I-Term. Any settings that you think you may have fouled up, etc.. in the
setup program may be changed within I-Term by choosing [S]ettings from
the main menu!
Chapter 3 - I-Term's Main Menu Features
I-Term starts up in the terminal mode. This is the mode in which
you can enter your /AT (Attention) commands to communicate with your
modem. To get a menu press the [F1] key on your keyboard (upper left
part of your keyboard). It will bring up the "MAIN MENU" for I-Term.
This menu has the options you will need to dial out and use
utilities and such. This is the heart of I-term. If you want to get
back to the TERMINAL MODE, press [F1] again and you will be back where
you started.
The following is a description of ALL the CURRENT main menu
features and functions:
[F1]-Terminal/Unix Shell Mode: Returns you to Unix Shell mode
while online and Terminal mode when not
online.
[A]ddress Book - Triggers your personal address book where records
of contacts, friends, coworkers, etc.. can be kept
along with their e-mail addresses. The user can
[M]ail, [S]end Text File to, [F]inger, or [T]alk
to a user on the list by moving the cursor (--->)
to the user desired (using arrow keys and pgup/pgdn)
and choosing the desired option.
You can also [D]elete, [A]dd, or [E]dit entries on the
list. Hitting [Q] will return you to I-Term's Main
Menu
[C]heck Mail - Launches the mail program defined in [S]ettings
under the I-Term Main Menu.
[E]dit Macros - Triggers I-Term's MACRO EDITOR.
Macros are basically key definitions. In other
words, when you define the sentence "I love cheese"
to the F3 key, then everytime you hit F3, "I love
cheese" will be sent over the line.
The MACRO EDITOR will first ask you for a key to
define/view. This key may be any of the function keys,
other than F1 and any alt- character (e.g. alt-p,
alt-e,alt-f,etc..) Follow the instructions given in the
MACRO EDITOR to create your own personal set of MACROS.
[F]ile Box - This, essentially, is your local Unix Shell Account
file area. Once the [F]ile Box option is chosen, I-Term
will retrieve your file directory and display it in a window
at the top of the screen. This is where all the LOCAL
file manipulation is done. From the [F]ile Box
a user can upload, download, view, delete, rename files
as well as change, rename, make and delete
directories. All of the commands as well as information
on how to maneuver within the file box are listed at
the bottom of the screen.
When [U]ploading a file to your Unix shell acct.,
I-Term will return you to your Unix shell. Your system
will then, most likely, prompt you to tell your terminal
program to do a SEND. AT this point, hit [F1] for the
main menu, [Z] for Zmodem Send and then, enter the
filename of the file you want to upload. Once this is done,
DSZ takes over uploading your file to your file box.
When DSZ finishes uploading, I-Term returns you to your
File Box.
Unix zmodem send and receive strings (e.g. sz and rz)
can be defined from within the [S]ettings option in the
I-Term Main Menu.
[H]ang up - Hangs Up on your system (sends +++, waits 3.5 seconds,
and then sends /ATH0 to your COM port)
[I]-term topic list - Triggers the I-term topic lister/loader.
(See Chapter 4 - Using and Creating I-term
Topic Lists)
[L]eave I-Term - Leaves I-term (puts the user back to DOS) without
hanging up.
[M]anual Dial - Lets the user instruct I-Term to dial a user-specified
telephone #.
[Q]uit to Dos - Hangs Up the line and quits I-Term, placing
the user back into DOS mode.
[S]ettings - Lets the user set parameters defined in the
SETUP program. Note: ANSI terminal emulation
means vt102 terminal emulation on your Unix Shell
Account system.
[U]nix command help - Triggers help on a Unix command while
the use is on-line. (activates man pages).
[V]ariable Definitions - Triggers the local Unix Shell Acct. variable
list. ("setenv" is sent over the line)
[W]rite/Edit Text File - Lets the user write or edit a text file
online using either the pico or vi editor.
(The user can select a default Unix text
editor from within the [S]ettings option in
the I-Term Main Menu).
[X] - Logout - Logs off your Unix system by sending the default
logout string. The user can define a default Unix
logout string from the [S]ettings option in the
I-Term Main Menu.
[Z]modem Send - When your Unix system prompts you to tell your
terminal program to send, select this option.
I-Term will then ask for a filename of the file to
upload. DSZ then takes over and uploads the file
to your Unix Shell Acct. directory.
Chapter 4 - Using and Creating I-Term Topic Lists
SECTION 1:THE TOPIC LIST
------------------------
The topic lister/loader is triggered from I-term's main menu
by choosing [I] (I-term topic list). When the I-term topic list
is activated, I-term loads up the default list, which is defined
in [S]ettings under the Main Menu. I-Term comes with a topic list,
"services.txt". This topic list is set as the default upon setup.
The FILENAME of the current topic list is displayed in the lower
right hand corner of the Topic List screen.
To choose a topic, simply type the NUMBER of the topic of interest.
This will trigger your chosen topic's relative topic page, listing
all newsgroups and departments dealing with that topic (See next
section, THE TOPIC PAGE).
To load a user generated Topic List, type 0 and hit enter. I-Term
will then ask you to enter a filename and hit ENTER. If the list you
specified is a valid topic list, then your screen should immediately
refresh with all new topics! Information on how to create your own
topic list is contained in section 3 of this chapter, CREATING YOUR
OWN TOPIC LISTS AND PAGES.

Figure 3.2.1
Iterm's topic pages are organized into 5 windows: Newsgroups,
Departments, Help, Description and Topic. (See Fig. 3.2.1)
The TOPIC window:
----------------
This window displays the current topic, the one chosen while
inside the TOPIC list.
The HELP window:
----------------
The HELP window describes all of the commands that can be accessed
from within the topic page. Here is a list and description of these
commands:
[U]- Unix Shell : Takes you out of I-term and into Unix Shell mode,
the mode you were in before you hit [F1] online.
[TAB]-Toggle News/Dept : Moves the cursor to the DEPARTMENTS window
if it is in the NEWSGROUPS window and
vice-versa.
[Up/Down Arrow Keys]-Select: Moves the cursor up and down within the
current window.
[PgDn/PgUp]-Next/Previous Page: Flips to the next or previous page of
Newsgroups, Departments, or Department
Sites
[Back Arrow]-Previous Directory: Lists the previous directory of
the current window.
[ENTER]-Choose Entry: Selects the entry currently pointed to by
the cursor.
[T]-Topic List: Takes you back to the TOPIC LIST screen.
[F]-File Box: Triggers the FILE CLIENT, listing out all of the files
available in your Unix Shell Account directory.
[M]-Mail Box: Launches your mail program!
[Q]-Logout : Leaves your system.
The NEWSGROUPS window:
----------------------
Newsgroups relative to the topic chosen in the TOPIC LIST are listed
in this window. Newsgroups which are listed in YELLOW and contain a '*'
at the end signify that an entire heirarchy (alt,comp,biz,etc..)
will be listed out in the window if that entry is chosen.
Newsgroups which are listed in GREEN and have a '/' at the end
signify that a directory of newsgroups will be listed out if that
entry is chosen. For exaple, if rec.sport/ is chosen, I-term will
give you a new choice of newsgroups that begin with rec.sport.
(e.g. rec.sport.baseball, rec.sport.baseball.college, rec.sport.cricket,
etc..).
The DEPARTMENTS window:
-----------------------
Q: What ARE Departments ?
A: Departments are ftp, telnet, WWW (via lynx), mail, and gopher
sites relative to the current topic.
All of the Departments are initially listed in RED. Once a department
is chosen, the user is given a list of sites the user may visit. This is
called a SITE list. All of the sites listed are relative to the Department
chosen. This department is displayed in the upper left hand corner of
the DEPARTMENTS window and is preceeded by "Dpt. : ".
The DESCRIPTION window:
-----------------------
The DESCRIPTION window lists out a description of the newsgroup,
department, or site pointed to by the cursor. It may also give information
on a password or login for a TELNET site, links to choose when using
GOPHER, or a directory the FTP CLIENT will send you into when the
cursor points to an FTP site.
TO RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU FROM THE TOPIC PAGE, JUST HIT THE
FUNCTION KEY, F1.
The FTP client
--------------
When an FTP site is chosen from the TOPIC PAGE, I-Term launches
the user into that FTP site, logging on as the name specified
after the "N:" in the description (usually "anonymous"), and uses
your e-mail address as the Password. I-Term then sets mode to "binary"
and proceeds to the directory specified in the DESCRIPTION.
Once inside the directory, a user can PUT files from his/her
personal FILE BOX, GET files INTO the FILE BOX, VIEW Text Files,
Change Directories and execute other operations. The summary
of options that can be accessed from within the file client is located
at the bottom of the screen. All files inside the directory are listed
in a window at the top of the screen. Users can page up and down through
this list.
When the user selects [Q] to QUIT from the FTP site, he/she is
returned to the TOPIC PAGE.
NOTE : When a directory contains greater than 450 files, I-Term
only lets the user access the first 450.
SECTION 3:CREATING YOUR OWN TOPIC LISTS AND PAGES
-------------------------------------------------
To create your own topic lists and topic pages, you will need
to use a TEXT editor such as EDIT in MSDOS.
TOPIC NAME
----------
To begin creatinga TOPIC PAGE, first pick a name for your topic.
In our working example, let's use "mypage". Our first line would
look like this:
TPIC=mypage
NEWSGROUPS
----------
Next, decide which newsgroups you would like to include inside
the topic page. The next line should read "beginuse".
If you would like to include an entire heirarchy
(e.g., alt, biz, clari, comp, etc..) in your page, follow up
the newsgroup with a '*', leave 4 or 5 spaces and type :
ENTIRE LIST OF <heirarchy> NEWSGROUPS. <heirarchy> would be
your choice of heirarchies (alt, biz, clari, etc..). For a
DIRECTORY of newsgroups (for example, all the newsgroups that
begin with rec.sport) follow up the newsgroup with a "/",
leave 4 or 5 spaces and type: DIRECTORY. To include a single
Newsgroup in your topic page, just type the name of the newsgroup,
leave 4 or 5 spaces and type a description of that newsgroup.
So, say we wanted to place the alt heirarchy, the rec.sport directory
of newsgroups, and the biz.comp.services newsgroup into mypage,
the next 5 lines would read:
beginuse
alt* ENTIRE LIST OF ALT NEWSGROUPS
rec.sport/ DIRECTORY
biz.comp.services Computer services
end.
Always end your NEWSGROUP list with the word "end." as shown.
DEPARTMENTS
-----------
To add departments to your topic page, begin each department
by choosing a DEPARTMENT NAME. Let's say we want to include 2
departments inside our list. The first of which will be
"Internet UnderGround Music". We would begin by typing:
DPT=Internet UnderGround Music
Next we would include the site or sites relative to this
department. Let's say we knew 2 sites where this service is
presented: "gopher gopher.iuma.com" and "lynx http://www.iuma.com/".
We want to input these sites as well as a description
for each site. The next 4 lines would look like this.
SITE=gopher gopher.iuma.com
SITDSC=The gopher server for I.U.M.A.
SITE=lynx http://www.iuma.com/
SITDSC=WWW server for I.U.M.A.
"SITE=" indicates a site NAME while a "SITDSC=" directly under
the site indicates a description for that site.
We close out the department by providing a Department Description.
Our description is "I.U.M.A. Archives of Music".. The next line
would then read:
offers: I.U.M.A. Archives of Music
Let's say our 2nd Department would be called "I-term file area".
This department contains one site: ftp wuarchive.wustl.edu.
The directory where I-Term files are located would be
pub/msdos_uploads/internet. Also, one may log-on to wuarchive
using the name "anonymous". This is how we would define
this department:
DPT=I-term file area
SITE=ftp wuarchive.wustl.edu
SITDSC=cd . N:anonymous
offers: Files dealing with I-Term.
The first part of the site description signifies the
directory you want to "cd" into, while the last part
describes the name you want to log-on with preceeded
by "N:".
Once again, the department description is contained
at the end preceeded by "offers: "
We close out our topic by typing a line of 10 or more
"+"'s like this:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Our entire topic would then, look like this:
TPIC=mypage
beginuse
alt* ENTIRE LIST OF ALT NEWSGROUPS
rec.sport/ DIRECTORY
biz.comp.services Computer services
end.
DPT=Internet UnderGround Music
SITE=gopher gopher.iuma.com
SITDSC=The gopher server for I.U.M.A.
SITE=lynx http://www.iuma.com/
SITDSC=WWW server for I.U.M.A.
offers: I.U.M.A. Archives of Music
DPT=I-term file area
SITE=ftp wuarchive.wustl.edu
SITDSC=cd . N:anonymous
offers: Files dealing with I-Term.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
You can apppend this listing to an already existing topic list or
start a new text file containing this listing. If you DO start a new list,
make sure to end the text file with:
endlist.
For even MORE examples, just look at the file, services.txt, to
see how the 20 sample topics are organized.
TOPIC PAGE limits
-----------------
Here are the maximum number of topics per list, departments per
topic, sites per department, and newsgroups per topic that can be defined.
Maximum Number of Topics per list: 40
Maximum Number of Newsgroups per topic: 600
Maximum Number of Departments per topic: 20
Maximum Number of Sites per Department: 20
Chapter 5 - Troubleshooting Guide and Upgrade Information.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why does my system lock up whenever I hit [I] from the main
menu?
A: The I-Term Topic List is an option tht can be accessed online
only! Only use it online only!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Whenever I use the "tin" newsreader, the screen erases itself
once a list of newsgroups is presented. What's wrong?
A: To use "tin", set your terminal to vt52 on both I-Term (in [S]ettings)
AND your Unix Shell Acct. This should do the trick! Keep in mind
that if you know your set prompt and set command prefixes, you
can turn AutoSet on. Once on (and if you are INSIDE an I-term
TOPIC PAGE), I-term will automatically change the terminal emulation
on both I-Term AND your Unix Shell Account when accessing tin via
TOPIC PAGE.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: When I use I-Term, I get some strange characters within lynx and
gopher. What should I do?
A: Check to make sure that
1) Your Unix Shell Acct terminal emulation is set to vt102
and
2) I-Term's terminal emulation is set to ANSI (in [S]ettings
from the main menu)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: When I try loading up a TOPIC LIST I created, I-Term boots me to DOS.
A: Check to make sure that the topic list you created is valid. Make
sure each topic has a Newsgroup section that starts with "beginuse"
and ending with "end." Also, make sure each department is described
with the "offers: " statement. And MOST IMPORTANT, make sure that the
list is ended by "endlist" written at the end of your Topic List.
(See Chapter 3: Section 3 - CREATING YOUR OWN TOPIC LISTS AND
PAGES)
